What do we do now?

A librarian emailed me about the current painful state of the world.

She asked, “What do we do now?”

Here is an expanded version of my answer…

————-

The answer to the question “What do we do now?” is the same it has always been (and always will be):

Now we do what we can to make the world just a little bit better.

Now we show kindness.

Now we offer forgiveness.

Now we support those who are suffering.

Now we elect those who care and advocate policies that matter.

Now we choose hope, even when—especially when—it feels foolish.

I am struggling with all this right now, but there is something that brings me comfort:

We are called to “do good.”

We are NOT called to “guarantee good.”

The difference is subtle, but VERY important.

The world is too big for you to feel responsible for the OUTCOME of the actions of 8,300,000,000 humans.

You are, though, responsible for your own actions.

Before you close this email, send one sincere, kind email or text to someone.

It will not fix the world…

But the world will be just a tiny bit kinder…

May you have a kinder week…

Peace,

Ryan
